Embedded within the lettering are four transformative figures whose lives and work helped redefine American democracy: Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ida B. Wells, Congressman John Lewis, and Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Each individual represents a distinct era of struggle, courage, and political awakening within the ongoing pursuit of civil rights and voting access in America.

Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. symbolizes moral leadership, organized resistance, and the national demand for equal citizenship under the law. His presence within the design reflects the enduring fight against voter suppression and the belief that democracy must be actively protected through collective action and civic participation.

Ida B. Wells represents fearless truth-telling and the power of the written word as resistance. As an investigative journalist, suffragist, and anti-lynching activist, Wells challenged systems designed to silence Black voices and exclude Black Americans from full participation in public life. Her inclusion speaks to intellectual resistance, political advocacy, and the importance of informed citizenship.

Congressman John Lewis embodies sacrifice, endurance, and unwavering commitment to voting rights. From the marches in Selma to decades of public service, Lewis became a living symbol of the physical and political struggle required to secure ballot access for marginalized communities. His image within the design serves as a reminder that the right to vote was paid for through protest, perseverance, and personal risk.

Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm represents political independence, representation, and fearless disruption of established systems. As the first Black woman elected to the United States Congress and the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s presidential nomination, Chisholm challenged the boundaries of race, gender, and political power. Her presence reinforces the idea that participation in democracy also means reshaping who is seen, heard, and represented within it.

Together, these figures transform the word “VOTE” into a visual narrative of struggle, progress, sacrifice, and possibility. Their placement within the typography symbolizes how generations of Black leadership, activism, and advocacy are woven directly into the foundation of democratic participation in America.
